Membership fees, other fees and membership types

The difference between the membership fee and the training fee, how to create and assign fees, and what happens when an application is approved.

Three types of fee — and why NIF cares

When you create a fee, you choose a ‘Type’: ‘Membership fee’, ‘Training fee’ or ‘Other fee’.

The membership fee is the payment for being a member of the club. On 11 November 2025 the board of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) decided that only the membership fee must be collected through an NIF-approved membership system. Training fees and other fees are exempt.

Sportio is not an NIF-approved membership system yet (the connection is awaiting an agreement with NIF). Until it is in place, the membership fee should still be collected through the club's approved system. Training fees, cup fees and similar can be collected in Sportio already.

Important: Choose the right type. It separates the membership fee from the training fee in reports and in the future connection with NIF.

What NIF requires of the membership fee

The membership fee is adopted by the annual general meeting (model statutes for sports clubs § 10) and must be at least NOK 50 per member. Sportio never lets a sibling discount, late registration or a cap per household take a membership fee below NOK 50.

Membership applies from the day the membership fee is paid (NIF's statutes § 10-4).

A family membership is only a discount: each child is a member in their own right and has their own charge, even if the household gets one invoice.

Honorary members can be exempted by the annual general meeting. The treasurer then uses ‘Exemption’ on the charge under ‘Membership fees’.

Voting rights and removal from the register

Voting rights and eligibility at the annual general meeting require a paid membership fee (§ 2-5). An unpaid training fee does not take anyone's vote away. Before the annual general meeting, Sportio shows the list of those who have not paid the membership fee for the year.

A member who has not paid after a payment reminder may be removed. A member who owes the membership fee for two years must be removed (§ 10-6 (2)).

Sportio shows these members on ‘Overview’ under ‘Members who owe membership fees’, but never removes anyone automatically. That is the board's decision.

Late registration

NIF has no rule for members who join in the middle of the season — that is up to the club or the annual general meeting. Rules are entered on the ‘Discounts’ card under ‘Finances’ → ‘Settings’, in the ‘Late registration’ field, for example ‘from 01.07: −50 %’.

The rules apply only to annual fees, and only to members who joined in the same season year. The sibling discount is calculated on the remaining amount.

Membership types and prices

Under ‘Membership fees’ you find the ‘Membership types and prices’ card — the club's own categories, for example Child, Junior and Senior, with price, period and age limits.

The types are used in the membership form on the club website, in the price list there, and when you register a member. Leave the price empty if you do not want to publish a price.

Create a fee

  1. Go to ‘Membership fees’ and choose ‘New fee’.
  2. Give it a name, for example ‘Membership fee 2026’, and fill in ‘Amount (NOK)’ and ‘Due date’.
  3. Choose the ‘Type’ and who it ‘Applies to’ — the whole club or one team.
  4. Leave ‘Use discount rules’ on if the sibling discount and the cap per household should apply.
  5. Save. Nobody receives anything yet.
Tips
  • Do you charge different amounts per membership type? Create one fee per amount. When assigning, you choose which membership types the charge applies to.

Assign the fee

‘Assign members’ creates one payment charge per member. Before anything is saved, you see ‘The charge applies to’, ‘New charges’, ‘Already have a charge’ and ‘Amount to collect’.

A member never gets the same fee twice — those who already have a charge are skipped. No invoice, email or notification is sent when you assign. The charge becomes visible to the member in the app, and if you want to collect it with a KID, choose ‘Create invoices’ afterwards.

When an application is approved

If you approve a membership application under ‘Members’ → ‘Applications’, Sportio creates the member and — if you leave the option on — a membership fee charge straight away.

The charge is taken from the membership type the applicant chose. The name must match a type under ‘Membership fees’ exactly, and the type must have a price. If a fee already exists for the same type and period with the same amount, it is used. Otherwise one is created.

The dialogue tells you before you approve if the type does not exist or has no price. In that case no fee is created, and you can assign it manually later.
